Comments: A colonoscopy performed in this 78 year old man revealed this lesion in the sigmoid colon. This is a nodular, fungating, ulcerating mass with blackened areas due to submucosal hemorrhage into necrotic tissues. The mass is circumferential and nearly obstructing. Probing with the biopsy forceps demonstrates both the firmness and friability of the mass. The pathology demonstrated an infiltrating moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma composed of round to irregular glands with epithelial proliferation and piling up, and prominent central necrosis.
